Nicosia Goes Zero Waste is 1-year local European Solidarity Corps project that started implementation in late December 2022. The team of Zero Food Waste Cyprus undertook this project intending to prevent and reduce food waste generation in local fruit and vegetable markets by engaging young community members. At the same time, the team rescued food and disseminated it to anyone in need.
The primary objective was to enhance the existing capacity of the team, improving the team operations and increasing the amount of food waste saved per week. Awareness-raising campaigns were conducted, showcasing the significant daily food waste, and sensitizing the community. Additionally, the volunteers were empowered by assigning leadership roles during market collection and distribution activities, allowing them to share ideas and utilize project funds to implement improvements. Lastly, a space was created for cultural exchange among our predominantly refugee and asylum seeker beneficiaries, fostering unity and mutual learning among volunteers and beneficiaries.
